How does a solar electrical system work?
Solar electrical systems consist of solar panels and Inverters. The solar panels are made from solar cells that generate electronic flow in the form of Direct Current (DC) power after exposed to the sunlight. The inverters convert the DC power to Alternative Current (AC) power that can be transmitted through utility grid and used by AC power driven appliances and equipment, such as your TV and refrigeration.
What is the life of a solar power system?
The life of a solar power system can last more than 30 years. We use not only top quality and UL/CSA certified panels, racking and inverters, but also auxiliary components and materials, including cables and disconnects to ensure the longevity of your solar system.
What is is the difference between Power (kW) and Energy (kWh)?
Power measured in kW (1000 x Watt) is the instant rate of electricity that a solar power system can generate while Energy measured in kWh (1000 x Watt x hour) is the total electricity generated within a given time.
What is a Grid-Tie, Off-Grid or Grid-Interactive system?
Grid-Tie is a solar power system that sends its generation to the utility grid while the generation of an Off-Grid solar power system is consumed locally without transmitting to the utility grid. Grid-Interactive system is a hybrid system that combines the benefits of the Grid-Tie and Off-Grid systems to achieve multi-operation modes. United 2Solar offers Grid-Tie, Off-Grid and Grid-Interactive systems.
What is the difference between microFIT and Net-Metering?
Both microFIT and Net-Metering are Grid-tie projects. However, microFIT project owners receive the payments direct from the local hydro companies for the electricity they have generated from their solar power systems while Net-Metering project owners are reducing their hydro bills to zero by offsetting their hydro consumption with the electricity they have generated from their solar power systems.
Who is eligible to participate in the microFIT project?
Currently, Ontario Power Authority (OPA) restricts microFIT to individuals who own property, municipalities, education and health facilities and religious institutions . Individuals are only allowed to own one microFIT project. The maximum capacity of a microFIT project is 10kW.
What is the cost for a microFIT solar power project?
The cost of a microFIT project depends on various factors, including system size, roof complexity, connection requirement, locations and etc..A typical 10kW rooftop solar power system in south Ontario costs between $30,000 to $35,000. United 2Solar provides the most competitive cost for microFIT project. We match any similar official offers from our competitors.
What is the paid back time and ROI for microFIT project?
A typical 10kW south facing rooftop solar power system in Ontario generates 12,000 kWh per year in average or $4,608.00 in revenue as per the current microFIT rate. This will allow 7-8 years paid back time and up to 10% rate of return on your investment (ROI).
Does the sytem generate electricity on cloudy days or at night?
Solar power systems need sunlight to generate electricity. They still produce power during cloudy or even raining days, but the production will be reduced accordingly. They systems don’t work at night.
How do I know my system is performing properly?
You can check the inverter screen for the operation, The solar power systems supplied by United 2Solar come with the free web-based remote monitoring for you to check the system performance at anytime and anywhere.
How long will it take to apply and install a microFIT project?
It typically takes 4 to 6 months from the initial registration with OPA to have a final microFIT contract from it. The actual installation is about 2-3 days. The application and permitting process takes most of the time.
How will the solar power system be maintained?
There is little maintenance required except to keep solar panels free and clear of debris and dirt accumulation, and check the electrical wiring periodically. The solar power systems installed by United 2Solar have free web-based remote monitoring system to ensure the proper operation of the solar power systems.
Will the microFIT project increase my insurance premium?
You shall inform your insurance company about your rooftop solar power system. So far, the feedback from our customers indicate that the insurance companies treat the rooftop solar system as a part of your home properties. No premium is increased specific due to the installation of solar solar systems.
What warranties will I get for my solar power system?
United 2Solar provides leading industrial warranties, including 3 year installation labor and material warranty, solar panel 10 years workmanship warranty and 25 years performance warranty, inverter standard 10 years warranty and extendable to 20 years.
What will happen if I decide to sell my house?
OPA microFIT contract stays with the property so the new property owner would receive the benefit of the solar generation. Who would not want to purchase a property with its own income to offset the hydro bill and even make a profit? For Lease-To-Own, the home owner can transfer the lease to the next owner following a simply transfer application.
Do I need to replace my roof before install my rooftop system?
Our engineer will evaluate your roof condition and structural soundness before proposing a rooftop solar project. After the system installation, United 2Solar offers one free re-install of the solar system if re-roofing is required while engaging our roofing partner.
Is there any penalty to terminate my microFIT contract with OPA?
A microFIT contract holder may terminate a contract after submitting notification to OPA and receive its consent. There is no fees or penalties. However, after the termination, you will no longer receive the payments for the electricity generated from your solar power system.
Do I have to file income tax/HST on my microFIT revenue?
The payments received from the generation of a microFIT project are considered business income. As a business, you need to file the taxable income and all legitimate expenses to offset that income. The cost of solar system, together with other possible costs, is deductible under the capital cost allowance rule. You can also get the HST refunded as a small business owner. You shall consult with your accountant for details.
Can my roof structure take the extra weight of a rooftop solar system?
The weight of the rooftop solar power system is evenly distributed and spread through the roof trusses and thus bearing walls. The extra weight load has no impact on roof structure safety. In general, most residential properties in Ontario are complying with Ontario building code and suitable for 10kW rooftop solar system without requiring reinforcement. Our experienced structure engineer will inspect and confirm the roof structure before proposing a rooftop solar power system.
Do I need to remove ice/snow from the rooftop panels in winter?
The revenue of a solar power system is estimated based on yearly average, in which the system generates substantial less in winter seasons. We don’t recommend removing ice or snow from the rooftop solar panels as it is dangerous to operate on roof in witner and also could cause potential damage to panels.
Does my solar power system work if the power goes out?
If you have microFIT or Net-Metering project, the system will not work if power goes out as they are grid-tie system. By the code, a grid-tie system must shut off automatically as soon as the utility grid is interrupted or its quality deteriorate to certain level to safe guide the maintenance and grid quality.
